The information is from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which monitors earthquakes around the world.
The quake's epicenter occurred near the cities of Ferndale and Eureka on the north coast of the state, at a depth of 16 kilometers, around 02:30 am.
The earthquake caused power outages for tens of thousands of customers in Humbolt County. In addition, roads and buildings in several cities suffered severe damage.
Seaside County is more than 200 miles north of San Francisco in a seismically active area.
Tuesday's quake was followed by more than 40 aftershocks, including a large one about five minutes after the main quake with a magnitude of 4.6, according to the USGS.
Among the damaged roads is the one through Fernbridge, a historic stretch of the River Eel that serves as the main route for Ferndale residents to get to Eureka, the county's largest town. The bridge was closed on Tuesday, and pictures showed a crack had formed in the nearby road.
The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said there was widespread damage from the quake but that no tsunami was expected.
